What the Bing Social Media Quiz Covers
The Bing Social Media Quiz covers six areas of social media knowledge every Sunday. Here is what to expect in each one before you play.
Platform History
Questions about the founding stories, pivotal decisions, and defining moments that shaped the platforms used by billions of people today. When platforms launched, who built them, which companies acquired which, and the moments that changed the trajectory of social media history. Players who follow tech news or digital culture will find this category familiar.
Social Media Business
Questions about how platforms actually make money. Advertising models, data economics, platform valuations, and the business facts behind the free services billions use daily. Most people use social media every day without knowing how the money flows. This category tests whether you do.
Viral Culture
Questions about the moments, memes, challenges, and movements that defined social media culture across different eras. The Ice Bucket Challenge, the Harlem Shake, the Mannequin Challenge. Viral moments that crossed platforms and generations and became part of global cultural memory.
Creator Economy
Questions about how creators make money, the platforms that pay them, and the economics of being a full-time content creator. YouTube Partner Program, TikTok Creator Fund, brand deals, and the numbers behind the creator economy that most people assume but few actually know.
Social Media Psychology
The most surprising category on the Social Media Trivia Quiz. Questions about why social media is designed the way it is. Variable reward loops, notification psychology, infinite scroll, the like button, and the behavioural science behind the features that keep billions of users engaged every day.
Global Social Media
Questions about the platforms that dominate outside Western markets. WeChat in China, VKontakte in Russia, Line in Japan and Thailand, Weibo as China's Twitter equivalent. The social media world looks very different depending on which country you are in. This category tests whether your knowledge goes beyond the platforms on your own home screen.
At the end of every Bing Social Media Quiz, all 6 correct answers are revealed with a short explanation. Every player walks away from the Social Media Quiz Online knowing something genuinely new about the platforms they use every day.
Understanding your rank on the Bing Social Media Quiz
Every player receives a rank after submitting the Bing Social Media Quiz. Since the question set refreshes every Sunday, your rank reflects how closely you followed platform news and digital culture in the week leading up to that Sunday.

Social Media: Facts Most People Never Knew
Billions of people use social media every day. Very few understand how it actually works. Here are the facts that go beyond the follower counts and the trending hashtags.
Social media platforms do not sell your data
The common belief is that platforms sell personal data to advertisers. They do not. What they sell is access to their audience. Advertisers pay to show ads to specific groups of users based on behavioural data that never leaves the platform. The data stays inside. The targeting leaves.
The average person sees over 6,000 ads per day
Research on digital advertising exposure suggests the average person encounters between 4,000 and 10,000 brand messages daily across all digital surfaces. Social media platforms account for a significant portion of that exposure because of how much time users spend on them.
Meta earns approximately 97 percent of its revenue from advertising
Despite offering services used by billions of people across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, nearly all of Meta's income comes from advertising. The platforms themselves are free to use because the users are the product being delivered to advertisers.
The Like button was almost called the Awesome button
Facebook's Like button went through several name proposals before launching in 2009. One internal proposal called it the Awesome button. The simpler Like won. The button fundamentally changed how people sought and measured social validation online and has been linked to anxiety and approval-seeking behaviour in research studies since.
Infinite scroll was invented by the engineer who now regrets it
Aza Raskin invented the infinite scroll feature in 2006. He has since become one of its most vocal critics, estimating that the feature costs humanity approximately 200,000 hours of collective human attention every day. Infinite scroll removes the natural stopping point that previously existed at the bottom of a page.
Notification sounds are deliberately designed to trigger dopamine responses
The sounds used for social media notifications are engineered to be attention-grabbing and rewarding. Research in behavioural psychology shows that variable reward systems, where you sometimes get a reward and sometimes do not, are more addictive than consistent reward systems. Social media notifications operate on exactly this principle.
WeChat is used for almost everything in China
WeChat is not just a messaging app. In China, it functions as a payment system, a government ID platform, a ride-hailing interface, a food delivery tool, and a social network simultaneously. Over 1.3 billion people use it monthly. It has no direct equivalent in Western markets.
The most followed person on TikTok is not American
Despite TikTok being perceived as a US-dominated platform, its most followed individual accounts are held by creators from diverse global backgrounds. The platform's algorithm distributes content globally in a way that no previous social platform did, creating non-Western celebrities with genuinely global audiences.
Russia has its own Facebook equivalent that predates Facebook
VKontakte, known as VK, was founded in 2006 by Pavel Durov, one year before Facebook launched internationally. It operates primarily in Russian-speaking countries and has over 100 million monthly active users. Durov later founded Telegram after leaving VK under pressure from Russian authorities.
