ABOUT THE AUSTRALIA QUIZ

What is the Bing Australia Quiz?

The Bing Australia Quiz on BingQuiz.org is a trivia challenge dedicated entirely to Australia. It covers its geography, wildlife, history, culture, government, sports, and the Australians who shaped the world. It consists of eight questions covering one of the most geographically unique, ecologically remarkable, and culturally rich countries on the planet.

The Australia Quiz Online goes beyond the obvious facts. Most people know Australia for kangaroos, the Sydney Opera House, and the Great Barrier Reef. The quiz tests what lies underneath that. The 65,000 year Indigenous history that makes Australia home to the world's oldest continuous culture. The evolutionary isolation that produced wildlife found nowhere else on Earth. The stories behind the Australians who changed science, sport, art, and global culture.

Every answer in the Bing Australia Quiz is researched and verified by the BingQuiz team before going live. The quiz is static and evergreen. The same eight questions are always available, always playable, with full explanations after every submission.

1

3

History, Culture and Government

FACTS MOST PEOPLE NEVER KNEW

Australia: Facts Most People Never Knew

Australia is one of the most recognisable countries in the world and one of the least understood. Here are the facts that go beyond the landmarks and the animals.

1

Australia is the only country that is also a continent

It covers approximately 7.7 million square kilometres, making it the sixth largest country by area yet one of the most sparsely populated nations on Earth. Most of its population lives along the eastern and southeastern coastlines.

2

The outback covers roughly 70 percent of Australia's total land area

One of the most extreme environments on the planet, it contains some of the world's oldest geological formations. Uluru, the iconic sandstone rock at its heart, is estimated to be around 550 million years old and extends several kilometres below the surface.

3

The Great Barrier Reef is the largest living structure on Earth

Stretching over 2,300 kilometres along the Queensland coastline, it supports more than 1,500 species of fish, 4,000 types of mollusc, and 600 types of coral. It is large enough to be seen from space.

4

80 percent of Australia's plant species exist nowhere else on Earth

The same applies to 84 percent of its mammal species and 45 percent of its bird species. This extraordinary biodiversity is the result of Australia separating from the ancient supercontinent Gondwana approximately 45 million years ago, creating an island continent where animals evolved in complete isolation.

5

Australia has more venomous snake species than any other country

Of the world's 25 most venomous snakes, 21 are found in Australia. Despite this, snake bite fatalities in Australia are remarkably rare, averaging fewer than five per year.

6

The platypus is one of the only egg-laying mammals in the world

It is also one of the only mammals with a venomous spur on its hind leg. When European naturalists first encountered a platypus specimen, they believed it was a hoax — a beaver's body sewn to a duck's bill.

7

Indigenous Australians have lived on the continent for at least 65,000 years

This makes Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures the oldest continuous living cultures in human history. It predates ancient Egyptian civilisation by more than 40,000 years and represents an unbroken connection to land, language, and tradition found nowhere else in the world.

8

Australia invented the secret ballot

The system of private voting used by most democracies globally today was first introduced in Australia in 1856. It is still known internationally as the Australian ballot. Australia was also one of the first countries in the world to grant women the right to vote at a national level, doing so in 1902.

9

Australia federated as an independent nation on January 1, 1901

Before federation, it was a collection of six separate British colonies. The decision to unite them into a single commonwealth was voted on by the citizens of each colony — one of the earliest examples of a national referendum being used to decide a country's political future.
