ABOUT THE MOON QUIZ

What is the Bing Moon Quiz?

The Bing Moon Quiz on BingQuiz.org is a trivia challenge dedicated entirely to Earth's only natural satellite. Eight questions cover the science, exploration history, cultural significance, and surprising facts about the Moon that most people never think to look up despite looking at it every night.

The Moon Quiz Online goes beyond the obvious facts. Most people know Neil Armstrong walked on the Moon in 1969 and that the Moon controls the tides. The quiz tests what lies underneath that. The geological composition of the lunar surface. The missions that came before and after Apollo 11. How the Moon stabilises Earth's axial tilt and what would happen without it. The mythology built around the Moon across every civilisation in human history.

Every answer in the Bing Moon Quiz is researched and verified against NASA documentation and reliable astronomical sources before going live. The quiz is static and evergreen. The same eight questions are always available, always playable, with full explanations after every submission.

WHAT IT COVERS

What the Bing Moon Quiz Covers

The Bing Moon Quiz covers six areas of lunar knowledge across its eight questions. Here is what to expect in each one before you play.

1

Moon Science

Questions about the physical and geological properties of the Moon. Surface composition, temperature extremes, gravity, the lunar cycle, and the science behind what makes the Moon unlike any other object in our solar system from Earth's perspective. Players who follow astronomy or space science will find this category familiar.

2

Moon Exploration

Questions about the missions that have visited the Moon, the astronauts who walked on its surface, the equipment left behind, and the discoveries made during lunar exploration. Apollo 11 is the starting point, but this category goes well beyond it into the full history of human and robotic lunar exploration.

3

Moon Mythology and Culture

Questions about how different civilisations across human history have understood, named, and built meaning around the Moon. From ancient Greek and Roman mythology to Indigenous lunar calendars and the Moon's role in world religions and cultural traditions. This category connects the Moon to the full breadth of human experience.

4

Moon Records and Facts

Questions about the surprising records and statistics that define the Moon. Its size relative to Earth, its distance, its age, how long it takes to complete an orbit, and the facts that most people know approximately but few know precisely.

5

Moon and Earth

Questions about the relationship between the Moon and Earth. How the Moon creates tides, how it stabilises Earth's axial tilt, how tidal locking keeps the same face of the Moon always pointing toward Earth, and how the Moon's gradual drift away from our planet is measurable in centimetres per year.

6

Future Moon Missions

Questions about the next chapter of lunar exploration. The Artemis program, the goal of returning humans to the Moon, international lunar exploration plans, and the scientific objectives driving the next generation of Moon missions.

At the end of every Bing Moon Quiz, all eight correct answers are revealed with a short explanation covering the science or history behind each one. Every player walks away from the Lunar Trivia Quiz knowing something genuinely new about the most familiar object in the night sky.

FACTS MOST PEOPLE NEVER KNEW

The Moon: Facts Most People Never Knew

The Moon is the most looked at object in the night sky and one of the least understood. Here are the facts that go beyond the phases and the tides.

1

The Moon has no atmosphere

Without an atmosphere, there is no weather, no wind, and no sound on the lunar surface. Footprints left by Apollo astronauts will remain perfectly preserved for millions of years because there is nothing to erode them.

2

The Moon experiences extreme temperature swings

Surface temperatures on the Moon swing from approximately 127 degrees Celsius during the lunar day to minus 173 degrees Celsius at night. This is one of the most extreme temperature ranges of any body in the inner solar system.

3

The Moon is not perfectly round

The Moon is slightly egg-shaped rather than a perfect sphere. The side facing Earth bulges slightly outward due to the gravitational pull our planet exerts on the lunar surface.

4

The Moon has moonquakes

The lunar surface experiences seismic activity. Apollo astronauts left seismometers on the surface that detected moonquakes caused by tidal forces from Earth and the thermal expansion and contraction of the crust as temperatures shift between day and night.

5

The Moon is drifting away from Earth

The Moon moves approximately 3.8 centimetres further from Earth every year. Over billions of years, this gradual drift will change the length of Earth's day and the nature of our tides in ways that are measurable now but will only become significant on geological timescales.

6

Without the Moon, Earth's axial tilt would be unstable

The Moon's gravitational influence stabilises Earth's axial tilt at approximately 23.5 degrees. Without it, Earth's tilt could vary dramatically over millions of years, causing extreme and unpredictable climate shifts that would make the planet far less hospitable to life.

7

The same side of the Moon always faces Earth

This is called tidal locking. The Moon rotates on its own axis at exactly the same rate as it orbits Earth, which means one hemisphere permanently faces our planet and the other, the far side, was completely unseen by human eyes until spacecraft first photographed it in 1959.

8

Every major ancient civilisation built calendars around the Moon

The lunar cycle of approximately 29.5 days forms the basis of months in most ancient calendar systems, including Babylonian, Hebrew, Islamic, Hindu, and Chinese calendars. The word month itself derives from the word Moon.

9

The Moon has over 1,000 names across human languages

No other natural object has been named, mythologised, and worshipped across as many cultures as the Moon. In Roman mythology, it was Luna. In Greek it was Selene. In Japanese it is Tsuki. Each culture built its own stories around the same object visible to all of them.

10

The first human artefact to reach the Moon was Soviet

Luna 2, a Soviet spacecraft, became the first human-made object to reach the lunar surface in September 1959. It predated the Apollo missions by a decade and marked the beginning of the space race's most ambitious chapter.
